Congratulations are in order to The Royal’s multi-talented Duty Manager Dan Mew, who won the Isle of Wight Golf Union Championship this weekend!!
The Tournament consisted of the top Men’s Golfers from across the Island all competing to lift the trophy and call themselves the Isle of Wight Golf Champion.
Dan, who started playing at the age of 9, when his mum and cousin got him into playing, has seen success before, notably winning Club championships in 2016, but this was his first time winning the prestigious Island Championship.
The tournament started with a competitive group 36 hole strokeplay qualifying event, where Dan would achieve impressive scores of 75+72, finishing in first place! Dan had secured his spot in the semi-finals, along with others in the Top 4.
In his one on one 18 hole semi-final match, Dan was dominant putting for victory on only his 14th hole, winning 5+4 and advancing to the final.
In the final Dan played against fellow club member George Foreman, “George has always been an inspiration to young Island golfers and has always been there as a friend and competitor.”, Dan says fondly.
The heavy wind and rain didn’t slow Dan down in an almost perfect game against Foreman, Dan won on his 13th hole 6+5 to take home the Isle of Wight Union Championship 2023!
Our always modest Daniel simply commented, “Thanks Paul for letting me have the weekend off.”
CONGRATULATIONS DAN! Amazing achievement!
