Food Miles & Local Business Support

The freshest, and finest of local Isle of Wight ingredients. Our restaurant works with the likes of The Tomato Stall, IOW Cheese Co, Isle of Wight Distillery/Mermaid Gin, local fisheries and farms. Our beautiful gardens allow us the space to grow our own herbs inhouse. The net result of this is very low food miles, support for local businesses and sustainability.

Waste Reduction & Clean Oceans

We use our back office software and reservations to pre-determine optimum produce quantities so that our waste is minimal. Our menu is designed to include multiple uses for fresh ingredients to further reduce wastage.

Our surrounding oceans are something we are very passionate about keeping clean. The Royal has therefore minimised single use plastics and actively resourced alternative options such as bamboo straws.

We have recently introduced environmentally-friendly packaging for our bathroom toiletries. Made with 30% wheat straw, with a paper label, the bottles are designed to be re-filled, cutting out the need to dispose of or recycle this packaging, yoghurt pots at breakfast with refillable glass containers for yoghurts.

We recycle many bedroom items such as newspapers and plastic bottles and recycling bins can be found in all our offices.

We have a cardboard Bailer to compact and recycle all cardboard from supplier packaging.

The Royal Gardens

We have recently invested £2500 into The Royal’s grounds and gardens.

A wild flower meadow belonging to and maintained by The Royal benefits bees and other wildlife.

The Isle of Wight is renowned as being one of the last exclusive strongholds of the native red squirrel. To support these beautiful indigenous creatures over the winter months, we have installed four squirrel feeders, with the optimum location chosen by The IOW Red Squirrel Trust.

Our gardening team maintain a purposeful compost heap which is used as fertiliser for gardening.

Energy Saving

We have been moving to LED lighting, and any lights are consciously turned off when not in use. For example restaurant lights are turned off between dining times.

Six electric car charging points have been recently installed paving the way for a Green Future at The Royal Hotel. For our guests who prefer to explore the Island on two wheels, Wight Cycle Hire deliver electric bikes to The Royal. We also offer safe overnight storage for anyone bringing their own bike.
