Walking in Dickens’ Footsteps: Launch of the Charles Dickens Literary Trail

Walking in Dickens’ Footsteps

Launch of the Charles Dickens Literary Trail

We were delighted to take part in the official launch of the Charles Dickens Literary Trail, a scenic walk tracing the very steps of one of Britain’s greatest authors during his time on the Isle of Wight.

The trail begins in Shanklin, winding over the downs and through Ventnor, stopping at The Royal Hotel where Dickens stayed in 1838, finishing in the picturesque village of Bonchurch, where Dickens stayed during the summer of 1849. Along the way, walkers can enjoy the stunning coastal views that once inspired the author, while discovering landmarks and local stories linked to his visits.

It was a great honour to be joined by 24 descendants of Charles Dickens, including Ian Dickens, who walked the trail alongside, local celebrities, staff of The Royal, Visit IOW, Southern Vectis, local enthusiasts and members of the Isle of Wight Ramblers. The group journeyed together through some of the Island’s most beautiful spots, sharing reflections on the writer’s time here and the places that once captured his imagination.

Unveiling of a Blue Plaque

To mark the occasion, the High Sheriff was proud to unveil a Blue Plaque at The Royal Hotel, commemorating Charles Dickens’ earlier visit to the hotel in 1838. The plaque now stands proudly at the entrance of the hotel as a lasting tribute to our literary heritage.

The trail, which was created by the Isle of Wight Ramblers, David Howarth and Ian Dickens, is part of the upcoming Isle of Wight Walking Festival.

It brings the Island’s literary history to life and offers you a meaningful way to connect with the area’s past. Whether you’re a lifelong Dickens fan or simply looking for a unique walk, it’s a journey well worth taking.

Start your own Dickens adventure and discover the stories written into the landscape of the Isle of Wight.
