Hot Cross Bun & Butter Pudding

This simple, yet delicious recipe is perfect for this coming Easter weekend with minimal ingredients from your store cupboard.

Equipment Needed

  • Spatula/ Spoon
  • Roasting Tray
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk


  • 6 Hot Cross Buns or 10 slices of medium white bread
  • 50g butter (soft enough to spread)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 60g caster sugar
  • Vanilla essence if you have
  • 250ml milk
  • 150ml double cream

Option extras: Ice Cream or Custard to finish


  1. Pre heat oven to 170°C, Butter the ovenproof dish.
  2. Slice the hot cross buns in halves and butter both sides. Lay the pieces evenly over the tray to fill one layer.
  3. Whisk the remaining ingredients together until fully combined.
  4. Pour mixture over the first layer making sure it is completely covered.
  5. Repeat above until all buns are used (this will depend on size of dish)
  6. Place some diced butter on any exposed bread and top with parchment/ baking paper. Place a light weight on top of the paper and leave to soak for an hour.
  7. Bake in the oven for 30/45 minutes or until the custard is almost set and the top is lightly golden.
  8. Portion and finish with custard or some ice cream to really indulge.
