Set sail to the Isle of Wight this autumn and let The Royal’s welcoming staff and sumptuous surroundings help you unwind and recharge. Less than thirty miles to the Island’s south coast from Southampton, you don’t have to travel far to enjoy a sense of escapism - and even perhaps some balmy, sunny days, thanks to the Island’s mild coastal climate.
Enjoy a cream tea in our beautifully landscaped gardens, or wander down to Ventnor seafront to watch the waves lapping on the shingle beach. A stroll west along the seafront will lead you to picturesque Steephill Cove (directly below Ventnor Botanic Gardens), while the village of Bonchurch lies to the east. Further afield, you may like to explore what makes the Isle of Wight a UNESCOBiosphere Reserve - one of just seven such reserves in the UK.
The 19-mile Yar River Trail is home to many species of the biosphere, including kingfishers, voles and dragonflies. The trail begins not far from The Royal at Niton, and follows the Island’s longest river all the way to Bembridge harbour - although you may prefer to walk shorter sections of the route, and stop at some of the island’s sights and villages along the way. Alternatively, you can explore the island’s countryside and wildlife in some of its dedicated nature reserves - the Hampshire & IOW Wildlife Trust’s website for some downloadable cycling trails.
The Isle of Wight is also renowned for its cycling routes, and the Lonely Planet cites the Island as one of the top ten cycling destinations in the world! You can expect dramatic, unspoilt scenery, quiet roads (and some off-road routes) and breath-taking views round every corner - try The National Trust’s website for some downloadable cycling trails.
